Utah Invisible Fence- How To Train Your Dog To Use It

There are many dog owners who feel that if they just install a Utah Invisible Fence all you have to do is put your dog in the yard and he or she will stay safely inside.  This isn’t the case.

You need to start with the right fence, the right materials, the right installation techniques.  It doesn’t stop there, though.  You need to spend the time using the correct techniques in training your dog to use the Utah invisible fence the right way.

Utah Invisible Fence- Start Out On Leash

Once you’ve got the fence installed correctly it’s now time to start training.  What you need to do is get your dog in the yard on a short leash.  You should have included flag installation along the line where the wire is buried.  That is very important so that your dog has a visual understanding of where the boundary is.  As time goes on most people will be able to remove those flags but it’s important that they are placed strategically in the beginning stages.

With the dog on a leash approach the flags that indicate the buried line.  As the indication (buzz or tone, depending on which brand of fence you are using) begins quickly pull the dog back into the yard.  This is important!  Many dogs will have no clue what they are to do or where they are to go when they experience the stimulation from the collar.  It’s important that you are there with the leash to show the dog that he or she needs to quickly run into the yard and away from the location of the stimulation.

Utah Invisible Fence- Repetition Is Key

Once you’ve done this training you want to go down the line and do it again.  Do it from different angles.  Do it at different locations along the fence line.  Do it with various distractions on the other side of the line.  The bottom line is that before you ever let your dog off leash in the yard with the Utah invisible fence system in place you need to have ‘proofed’ the dog in several different locations.

Once you’ve done your due diligence, however, it’s time to let the dog in the yard without a leash.  Make sure that this, too, is supervised.  Put distractions on the other side of the fence line and see if your dog can handle it.  If your dog makes any mistakes go back to leash training.  If your dog handles the Utah invisible fence training well, however, you can start leaving your dog loose in the yard.

You’ll periodically want to check in and test your dog but if you do this training well you should be in good shape.
